Waves Sweep Past Sacramento in Wyoming

Junior Jamie Hill had 18 kills and four blocks to help Pepperdine defeat Cal State Sacramento, 15-9, 15-9, 15-8, in the Wyoming Invitational women’s volleyball tournament Friday.

Hill had a hitting percentage of .424 for Pepperdine (1-0), which was ranked 25th in the nation in the coaches’ preseason poll.

Freshman Lindsay Phillips had 12 kills and 11 digs for Pepperdine and freshman Melissa Snow had seven kills and 15 digs.

Freshman Melissa Plass had 44 assists, seven digs and six kills for Pepperdine.

Concordia Invitational--The Master’s College defeated Cardinal Stritch (Ill.) and Cascade (Ore.) on the first day of the tournament at Irvine.

Master’s (2-0) trounced Cardinal Stritch, 15-1, 15-4, 15-1, and beat Cascade, 14-16, 15-5, 15-9, 15-5.

FOOTBALL

Faith Baptist 54, Spring Mountain (Nev.) 8--Junior Julio Bautista completed 14 of 19 passes for 288 yards and five touchdowns for Faith Baptist in the eight-man season opener at Indian Springs High in Nevada.

The game was called in the third quarter because of the 45-point rule.

Junior wide receiver Eujay Masangkay had six receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns for Faith Baptist.

MEN’S SOCCER

Wheaton College (Ill.) 5, Cal Lutheran 1--Scott Porter scored for the Kingsmen with three minutes left in the first half of a defeat in the Wheaton tournament.

Cal Lutheran (0-1) was outshot, 20-9, and gave up four goals to Rob Mouw.

Eric Brown had two assists for Wheaton (2-0), the defending NCAA Division III champion.

San Diego Mesa 2, Moorpark 1--Jorge Rodriguez gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead at the 10-minute mark of the first half, but Mesa scored two goals in the second half of a nonconference opener at Moorpark.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Ventura 2, Mt. San Antonio 0--Chrissy Sanford and Barb Almaraz scored to help the Pirates defeat the 1995 and ’96 state champion at Ventura.
