The Kings have hired Cammi Granato, captain of the U.S. women’s Olympic hockey team, as their new radio commentator and have scheduled a news conference for today to make the announcement.

Granato, 27, will be only the second woman broadcaster in the NHL. Sherry Ross was the New Jersey Devils’ radio commentator from 1992-95.

Granato will work alongside 17-year veteran play-by-play announcer Nick Nickson on new flagship station KRLA, beginning with the team’s exhibition opener Sept. 19 against the Colorado Avalanche at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

Granato replaces Mike Allison, who chose not to return for a fourth season. Granato’s brother Tony, now with the San Jose Sharks, played for the Kings from 1989-96.

Granato, a native of Maywood, Ill., played hockey for Providence College and ended her career as the Friars’ all-time leading scorer.
