Supreme Court

* Why is the press, including The Times, treating the California Supreme Court with such undeserved deference? In your excellent Sept. 3 editorial regarding the public’s loss of protection that had been afforded by the state bar’s attorney disciplinary system, you correctly state that Supreme Court intervention to revive that protection “clearly cannot be counted on.”

The Supreme Court’s failure to act has been unconscionable, has endangered the public and has essentially created a constitutional crisis regarding the separation of powers. The Supreme Court’s refusal to protect the public and its own independence has been reported as though the court members have no higher obligation than to act as political hacks. Why is the court getting a free ride?
