LAPD Open House Scheduled Today

Share

Want to get an inside look at a Los Angeles Police Department jail, a closer look at some SWAT team artillery, watch a narcotics police dog in action and enjoy a hamburger while you’re at it?

Valley residents can do all that and more today at the LAPD Devonshire Station’s annual open house from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“We just want to give people an opportunity to talk and mingle with law enforcement officers in a very neutral, friendly environment,” LAPD Sgt. Gene Leary said. “Usually, people only talk to the police when they need them.”

Other highlights of this free event include a mounted horse unit, a police helicopter, a Department of Animal Regulations horse rescue unit, new vehicles used by the California Highway Patrol, L.A. Fire Department equipment displays and a “Moon Bounce” for the kids.

“We’re also going to have some crowd pleasers like a dragster owned by one of the officers in the department, a restored ’55 Chevy, a Ford Cobra and a Humvee painted with the American flag,” Sgt. Leary said.

Members of the LAPD recruiting unit also will be on hand to provide information on joining the force. The LAPD Devonshire Station is at 10250 Etiwanda St. For more information on the open house, call the station at (818) 756-8285 .
