The Offenses

* The Bruins begin the quest to replace two major contributors from last season--tailback Skip Hicks and flanker Jim McElroy. At least there is a talented offensive line to spring the running game and a quarterback, Cade McNown, who will make the job easier for the receivers. Texas has a new starting quarterback, but Richard Walton completed 15 of 21 passes for 282 yards last week in the 66-36 victory over New Mexico State. Just as encouraging for the Longhorns, Wane McGarity was impressive in his return after sitting out the final eight games last season because of torn knee ligaments, making six catches for 117 yards.

* The Bruins have a new coordinator in Nick Aliotti, and a new 3-4 alignment The Longhorns also have a new coordinator in Carl Reese, and a new 4-3 alignment. The Bruins watched films of Louisiana State to see what Reese did there last season as well as last week’s Texas opener. Only two of UCLA’s 11 starters are seniors, while Texas has seven starters returning from a defense that ranked 104th in the nation against the run.

The Defenses

* The keys to the game: UCLA’s defensive front that averages 270 pounds and includes two sophomore alongside junior Pete Holland must be able to contend with a Texas offensive line that has three third-year starters and a junior returning starter and averages about 310 pounds. If successful in that area, the Bruins could at least slow Ricky Williams. Taking a big lead early would be a huge benefit since it would force the Longhorns to throw.

* Fast fact: All four times the teams have met--1970, ‘71, ’97 and ‘98--at least one has been ranked in the top 11.
