‘My Three Sons’ Election Tops Minnesota Races
Minnesota voters went to the polls Tuesday to settle what has been dubbed the state’s “My Three Sons” election.
State Atty. Gen. Hubert H. Humphrey III, son of the former vice president and senator, was favored to top a field of five candidates in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Among his opponents were Ted Mondale, son of former Vice President Walter F. Mondale, and Mike Freeman, son of former Gov. Orville Freeman.
The winner was expected to face a former Democrat, St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman. Coleman was heavily favored to win the GOP primary. The current governor, Republican Arne Carlson, is retiring.
In another primary, in Oklahoma, Democrats decided whether to make a dead woman their choice for the U.S. Senate.
Jacquelyn Ledgerwood, who died July 15, and air-conditioning repairman Don E. Carroll were on a Democratic runoff ballot in the state. Republican Sen. Don Nickles had no opposition and is considered virtually certain to win reelection in November.
