The sixth Rusty Newport Pro-Am surfing competition begins today and continues through Sunday in Newport Beach.

Sanctioned as a World Qualifying Series one-star men’s and women’s event, it offers prizes and cash totaling $20,000 and is open to competitors at all levels.

Among the divisions is a women’s pro-am, junior women’s (17 and under), elementary (11 and under), middle school (12-14), high school (15-18) and open men’s (all ages).

A highlight of the event is the Air Show, during which surfers will try to perform the most radical maneuvers over the lips of the waves in a winner-take-all format.

Competition begins at 7 a.m. each day at either 54th or 56th streets, depending on where the waves are the best.
