Marlins’ Hughes Will Resign

Gary Hughes, Florida Marlins’ vice president of player personnel who interviewed for the Dodgers’ general manager job, said he will resign at the end of the season.

Orrin Freeman, the Marlins’ scouting director, will take over with the title of special assistant to the general manager.

Four partners who are limited owners of the Cincinnati Reds plan to match a $7-million cash offer for one share of the team.

Marge Schott remains the controlling general partner. But the limited partners--Carl Lindner, George Strike, Louise Nippert and William Reik--reportedly are considering whether to try to buy her out.

A Washington investor last month offered $7 million to buy the share of the team now owned by Frisch’s Restaurants Inc. But the four partners exercised their rights to match his offer.

Oriole pitcher Scott Kamieniecki had surgery to remove a herniated disk in his neck and part of the sixth vertebra in his spine. He is expected to be ready to play by the start of spring training.
