Police have caught one of two 15-year-old youths who used a ladder to escape from Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, authorities said Friday.

Los Angeles Police Department officers arrested one of the boys, who was wearing an orange jumpsuit, Thursday evening, said Officer Don Cox. Probation authorities had called the youth a “high-risk” offender.

The boys were walking on Wednesday morning from the facility’s school to the living units when they took a ladder from a school maintenance area and used it to scale the center’s west wall. The boys then allegedly forced a man from his 1996 Oldsmobile close to the center and drove away, according to South Gate police.

About 6:30 p.m. Thursday, LAPD officers received a tip that one of the boys was hiding in a Crenshaw apartment. Police found the youth there, allegedly in possession of marijuana. The boy was taken to South Gate for questioning about the carjacking and then taken back to Juvenile Hall.
