Ethics Experts Reside in Ivory Towers

Share

* As the ethics officer for a transportation agency, I was very interested in the comments made by professors Arvind Bhambri and William Cockrum on whether an employee should snitch on their employer for using unauthorized software [“A Pitch to Snitch,” Aug. 14].

They both seem to indicate that if the employee did not approve of the company’s practices, the employee should resign. While I would agree that in a perfect world one of the options when one’s employer does not act in an ethical manner is to simply resign, I am afraid most of us do not have this option. Many employees are scared to even report such conduct to their immediate supervisor at the risk of repercussions.

* Illegally copying software is stealing. Conceptually, in the workplace, it is no different than buying a technical reference book and making hundreds of copies for your employees.
