Tony Gwynn drove in two runs and Matt Clement pitched 5 2/3 innings for his first major league victory Saturday night as the San Diego Padres defeated the Colorado Rockies, 4-1.

Gwynn had an RBI single in the third inning, and broke a tie in the fifth with a two-out double against John Thompson (8-11). San Diego, which clinched the National League West title Sept. 12, ended a four-game losing streak.

Clement (1-0), San Diego’s top minor league pitching prospect, got the start when Sterling Hitchcock suffered a sprained ankle while lifting weights Friday.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander gave up six hits and the lone run. He struck out five and walked four in his second major league start.

Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 51st save in 52 chances.

The Padres added two runs in the eighth on Steve Finley’s RBI double and Ruben Rivera’s pinch single.

Clement got a big assist from Donne Wall in the sixth as the Padres won for only the second time in seven games. After giving up Todd Helton’s single and a double to Mike Lansing, Clement intentionally walked Kurt Manwaring to load the bases with two out. Wall replaced Clement and got pinch-hitter Jeff Reed to ground out to end the inning.

Thompson, who hasn’t won since Aug. 23 at Philadelphia, gave up two runs on five hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked two.
