After hitting his 64th home run, Mark McGwire said for the “thousandth time” that he didn’t care whether he finished ahead of Sammy Sosa. Both players have said many times they wouldn’t mind if the home run derby ended up in a dead heat.

The response of Milwaukee Brewer Manager Phil Garner, whose team is in the middle of a five-game stretch against the pair: nonsense.

“I’ve played with guys like this in the past,” Garner said Saturday. “Not only do they not want each other to win, they don’t want anybody on their team to be better than them.

“Great players are selfish, and it’s baloney when we say we don’t want selfish players.”
