Rangers Leave Gift for Angels

From Associated Press

The Texas Rangers picked the worst time to give one away.

Entering the day with a one-game lead in the AL West and a three-game series against the Angels beginning tonight at Edison Field, the Rangers committed four errors and lost to Oakland, 6-3, Sunday, allowing the Angels to move back into a tie atop the division.

Former Ranger Kenny Rogers got his 15th win, Jason Giambi and Ben Grieve homered and the Athletics scored three unearned runs off the errors.

“It’s one of our most disappointing losses,” Ranger Manager Johnny Oates said. “It was not one of our [more] cerebral ballgames. We didn’t play smart and you’ve got to catch the ball.”

Rogers (15-8) lasted five innings in the 91-degree heat, giving up eight hits, striking out five and walking one. He is 4-1 against his former team.

Esteban Loaiza (3-5) was the loser, giving up six runs, three earned, in 5 1/3 innings on six hits.

“The four errors cost us the game,” Loaiza said. “It’s frustrating but somehow we’ve got to think of tomorrow and not today.”
