* Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., the money-losing film studio controlled by Kirk Kerkorian, said it has called off talks with unnamed companies about a possible merger. MGM, which revealed the discussions last month, was reportedly in talks with Walt Disney Co. and News Corp.

* Prodigy Communications Corp., a pioneer online service that faded amid competition from America Online Inc. and others, plans to sell shares to the public. White Plains, N.Y.-based Prodigy, a former venture of IBM Corp. and Sears, Roebuck & Co., is majority-owned by Carso Global Telecom of Mexico. It plans to raise as much as $86.3 million, although the initial public offering’s price and date haven’t been set.

* Advertising agencies J. Walter Thompson USA and McCann-Erickson played musical chairs, with Thompson picking up the $20-million Nabisco account that had previously been handled by McCann. Parsippany, N.J.-based Nabisco is trying to reverse an 18-month-long sales decline. Meanwhile, Westwood, Kan.-based Sprint Corp. awarded its consumer long-distance and local phone service business to New York-based McCann. It had previously been handled by J. Walter Thompson in San Francisco. Sprint also said it had parted ways with celebrity spokeswoman Candice Bergen, who appeared in Sprint ads as the “dime lady.”
