Forest Purchase

Share

I was elated to read that Gov. Pete Wilson had signed an agreement to purchase 7,500 acres of the Headwaters Forest (Sept. 20). Opportunities to preserve ancient redwood forests do not come about frequently, and redwoods do not grow back quickly. Coastal redwoods, like the ones at Headwaters, often take more than 50 years to reach mature stature.

I’ve actively protested against developer assaults on our wetlands and local Santa Monica Mountains. And like many of our local environmental heroes--Marcia Hanscom (Bolsa Chica Wetlands protection), Rep. Brad Sherman (money for the Santa Monica Mountains) and Sen. Barbara Boxer (coastal protection)--I’ve too often watched the losing battle to preserve dwindling precious resources. Perhaps Sen. Dianne Feinstein was correct when she said, “To those who care about the trees, this is the best we can get right now.” As a 12-year Sierra Club hike leader, I’ll take it.
