Share

UC Irvine welcomed 17,500 students as it began its 33rd academic year Friday. Of those students, 3,100 are freshmen, up from 2,800 last fall.

UCI Welcome Week concluded Friday with a dance and a virtual-reality motion-simulator that allowed students to experience a roller-coaster ride, a helicopter tour in Hawaii and an off-road speed race.

On Friday from noon to 2 p.m., the university hosts a free Social Security symposium, giving students the opportunity to address the future of Social Security. Shirley Chater, former commissioner of the U.S. Social Security Administration, will present the keynote address at the Student Center.
