Alliance for the Arts Holds Fund-Raiser

For $1,000, you can get your name on a seat at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.

As part of an ongoing fund-raiser to benefit theater performances, the Alliance for the Arts is offering people the chance to grace one of the 1,800 seats in the Fred Kavli Theatre with a bronze plaque with the donor’s name.

“I think that a lot of people like to do it because it’s fun,” said Patricia Moore, executive director of the Alliance for the Arts, the fund-raising arm of the Civic Arts Plaza.

“I’ve had people come to the office and have relatives visiting from out of town who want to show them their seat. It’s like a major spot on the visit,” she said.

Actress Jane Seymour of Malibu, star of the former CBS-TV show “Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman,” has lent her name to the alliance effort to promote the seat-naming fund-raiser. She and her husband, director James Keach, have each bought plaques, officials said.

Nearly 600 seats already have bronze plaques mounted on armrests. The plaques can fit up to three lines of text of up to 25 characters each.

Some plaques are purchased in memory of deceased relatives, while others commemorate birthdays. And some have been named in honor of newborn children.

“I know this one grandmother. Every time she has a grandchild, she buys a seat. She puts the name of her grandchild on there and the date of the birth,” Moore said.

There are more expensive options, your name on a dressing room for $25,000 or the main lobby glass doors for $50,000. Or for a modest alternative, you can dedicate a brick in the plaza. That will set you back $50.
