Davis Picks Texan to Head California Pesticide Panel

Gov. Gray Davis picked Paul Helliker of Austin, Texas, a man with ties to two environmental groups, as director of pesticide regulation for the California Environmental Protection Agency.

Helliker, 41, has been president of Clean Air Force since 1998. It is a partnership among business, government and public interest groups to reduce air pollution in Austin.

From 1993 to 1997 he was vice president of CALSTART, a California transportation business consortium. He also has held jobs with the California and federal environmental protection agencies.

He also has been on the boards of several organizations, including the California League of Conservation Voters and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The job, announced Wednesday, pays $105,883 a year and needs state Senate approval.
