Area Code Overlay

State regulators today will consider adding new area codes to the regions served by area code 415 in San Francisco and area code 510 in Oakland. In both cases, the California Public Utilities Commission is expected to approve overlay plans, which add a second code to cover new numbers in an existing region but allow residents and businesses to keep their current code and numbers. The plan would require the use of 11 digits when dialing within those regions starting in October 2000 for the 415 area and in April 2000 in the 510 region. The new codes have not been selected.
