Huang Helps Keep Irvine Swimmers Afloat at the Top

Jason Huang won two individual events and swam on two winning relay teams to help Irvine, the top-ranked boys’ swimming team in Orange County, defeat fifth-ranked El Toro, 122-48, in a Sea View League meet Wednesday at Heritage Park.

Huang won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute 50.28 seconds and the 100 butterfly (54.92) and was also on Irvine’s winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams. Jeff Natalizio won the 100 backstroke (58.52) and swam on the winning 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams for Irvine (3-0, 2-0 in league).

In another Sea View League meet:

Corona del Mar 99, No. 7 Santa Margarita 85--Sherwin Kim won the only individual race, the 200 individual medley (2:16.63), for visiting Corona del Mar (1-1 in league). Kim also swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

In the Century League:

No. 3 Villa Park 95, Foothill 75--Chris Koontz won the 100 butterfly in 55.83 for Villa Park (5-0, 2-0).

In Century League girls’ swimming:

No. 9 Canyon 135, Santa Ana Valley 35--Erin Volcan won two events, including the 50 freestyle in 24.8, and Katie Sackett won the 200 freestyle in 2:12.9, improved her personal best by five seconds, for Canyon (5-1, 2-0).

Foothill 86 1/2, No. 10 Villa Park 83 1/2--Kaitlyn Card won the 200 individual medley (2:15.78) and 100 backstroke (1:02.51) for Foothill (2-2, 1-1).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 129, Sonora 55--Annette Vayo won the 50 freestyle in 24.86 and the 100 backstroke in 1:00.81 for host Troy (5-0, 2-0).

In the Sea View League:

No. 1 Irvine 130, El Toro 40--Stephanie Hsiao won the 100 (54.44) and 200 freestyle (1:59.29) and swam on the winning 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays for host Irvine (3-0, 2-0).

No. 6 Santa Margarita 115, Corona del Mar 53--Dominique Rash won the 100 freestyle (56.24) and 200 freestyle (2:03.43) for host Santa Margarita (5-1, 2-0).

In South Coast League golf:

No. 6 San Clemente 191, Dana Hills 216--Neil McDaniel shot one-under-par 35, making four birdies, at Pacific for host San Clemente (9-0, 4-0).

In nonleague boys’ golf:

No. 7 Irvine 387, Aliso Niguel 405--Medalist Mike Lavery shot a one-under 71 for Irvine (7-1) at Oak Creek and El Niguel.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

No. 4 Brea Olinda 15 1/2, Savanna 5 1/2--Chris Manton and Matt Traino each won his singles set and teamed up for 6-4, 6-2, victories in doubles for host Brea (4-10, 1-0). Savanna is 7-4, 0-1.

In the South Coast League:

No. 7 Capistrano Valley 15, Mater Dei 3--David Sherman and Ben Feiner teamed for 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, victories to remain undefeated in league for host Capistrano Valley (8-1, 2-0). Logan Johnson swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for the Cougars.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

No. 10 Servite 10, Esperanza 8--Brock Heimann and Pat Buchanan swept in singles for the Friars (8-2).

In Empire League boys’ track and field:

Cypress 83, Loara 44--Clarence Moore went 43-11 in the triple jump for Cypress (2-0 in league).

In Golden West League boys’ volleyball:

No. 6 Servite 3, Ocean View 0--Eric Barnes had 19 kills and Kyle Smith had 10 blocks and 12 kills for Servite (7-0, 2-0), which won, 15-6, 15-11, 15-1. Ocean View is 3-1, 1-1.

In the South Coast League:

No. 8 Capistrano Valley 3, Mission Viejo 1--Kevin Frantz had 13 kills in the 15-10, 15-0, 4-15, 15-4 victory for visiting Capistrano Valley (3-2, 1-0). Jeff Taylor led Mission Viejo (1-4, 0-1) with 10 kills.

No. 10 Mater Dei 3, San Clemente 1--Pat Cope had 15 kills for Mater Dei (6-1, 1-1), which won, 15-9, 15-11, 7-15, 15-12. Nick Gardner had 17 kills for San Clemente (2-2, 0-1).
