U.S. Asked to Pay to Return Argentine Student’s Body
Three members of Congress from California asked the federal government Thursday to fly home the body of a young Argentine tourist who was killed in February near Yosemite National Park.
California’s two senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, both Democrats, and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena) said the gesture after the slaying of Silvina Pelosso, 16, would demonstrate “the United States’ good will and sympathy regarding this horrific murder.”
Silvina, of Cordoba, Argentina, arrived in Eureka in December to visit friends of her parents. She was on a trip to Yosemite National Park with Carole Sund, 42, and Julie Sund, 15, when they were killed. The women were last seen Feb. 15 and reported missing two days later.
The California lawmakers sent a letter to FBI Director Louis Freeh requesting that he ask the Department of Defense to transport Pelosso’s body back to Argentina and seek a waiver of any payment requirement.
