Officials Announce Plans for Movie, Retail Complex

City officials announced a plan Tuesday to build a retail and entertainment complex that will feature an 18-screen theater and a retail outlet.

“We have letters of intent from La Curacao and Sanborn Theaters to build in San Fernando,” said City Administrator John Ornelas. “They will anchor the complex, which we expect will also have restaurants and other retailers.”

The City Council is in the process of preparing a contract to sign a developer for the project, Ornelas said. He expects the developer will be Victor Georgino, who has built major theater/retail projects in Burbank and Ventura.

Once the contract with the developer is signed, a site will be determined within six months, Ornelas said.

Sanborn plans to build a 55,000- to 60,000-square-foot multiplex with stadium seating and nearly 3,500 high-back plush chairs.

As of last May,, the Newport Beach-based theater chain ranked No. 37 in the country, with 98 screens at 14 sites.

La Curacao, with outlets in Los Angeles and Panorama City, plans to build a 100,000-square-foot department store.

The Latino-oriented retailer sells electronics, appliances and general household items.

“This is a major step in the city’s efforts to acquire quality dining, shopping and entertainment,” Ornelas said.
