The City Council is considering crafting an ordinance that would require or encourage bilingual businesses to put their signs in English in addition to their native language. Councilman Kermit Marsh asked the city attorney to draft an ordinance similar to that in Gardena, which requires names of businesses to be in English.

Garden Grove has an ordinance that “encourages” English signs--which is what the Westminster council was originally looking at--but Marsh said such an ordinance is meaningless without force and asked for a draft based on Gardena’s.

The mayor and deputy city attorney raised doubts about the legality of such an ordinance, but all three council members present voted in favor of asking for a draft to consider.
