Freshwater

CASTAIC LAKE--Trout are biting in both lakes, especially the lower, where limits are obtainable on Power Bait, night crawlers and small spinners. Some largemouth bass, but very few lunkers. An occasional striped bass is being caught on a swim bait.

CASITAS LAKE--The bass bite is good. Mike Banales, Oxnard, 13 pounds eight ounces on a crawdad. Mark Rogers, Covina, 11-5 bass on a swim bait. Sye Fukui, Goleta, 10-4 bass on a swim bait. A few others topped 10 pounds. Smaller bass are biting in shallows on plastics. Trout remain active at Coyote and near dam. Some catfish.

LAKE PIRU--Trout and bass are sharing the spotlight. Trollers using Needlefish and Rapalas are doing best for trout. Night crawlers, crawdads and waterdogs are best for bass. A nine-pounder was caught by Bob Gagnon, San Pedro, on a waterdog at San Felicia Cove. Shore fishermen are catching small bluegill and crappie on worms and mini-jigs.

CACHUMA LAKE--Trout remain active, biting on Power Bait, Needlefish and Rapalas. Chris Rodriguez, Carson, 3-8 and 5-8 trout on orange Power Bait at E Point. Bass remain deep. Try a purple or red plastic worm at 15 feet. Randy Earwod, Downey, 5-12 bass on Green Weenie at the east end. A tagged-trout derby for cash is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. OSO RESERVOIR--The weather hasn’t hurt the bass bite. Ronnie Kovach of Fishing Expeditions, with his brother, Rick, caught 26 bass in a matter of hours Wednesday. They were caught on four-inch plastic worms and ran two-four pounds. A 7-9 was landed by Mike Harkey, Palmdale, on a Pig-n-Jig.

IRVINE LAKE--Steve Watson, Ontario, caught a 15 1/2-pound trout on a Kastmaster at Sierra Cove. Big trout are showing on the average of one or two a day. A cash contest is in progress through this month. Details: (714) 649-9111.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout are most active in early mornings and late afternoons. The limit as been increased to 10 per day to remove the trout before the warm weather sets in. Largemouth bass are catching occasional fish to five pounds on night crawlers and dark plastics.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Trout and bass are biting sporadically. A six-pound bass reportedly was caught on a purple grub.

LAKE PERRIS--Top bass was an 8-7 by Richard Franklin, Moreno Valley, on a Castaic Hard Bait at the dam. An 8-4 was caught by Moses Gallego, Corona, on an oxblood-colored plastic worm at the east end. Trout are biting too, and there are some big ones. Del East, San Bernardino, five trout totaling 18-4 pounds while trolling a green Rebel lure. Trolling anything in a shad-pattern is a good bet.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--An 11 1/2-pound bass at Hodges by K.K. Downsanouphit, Escondido, tops the list. He used a night crawler. Solid bass bites are in progress at Hodges, El Capitan and Sutherland. Trout remain active at Murray and Miramar.

DIXON LAKE--Trout are biting early and night crawlers are the best bet for lunkers. Javier Perez, Escondido, caught an 11-2. Bass can be seen in the shallows, but getting them to bite is tough. An 11-pounder was caught by Joel Fleck, Wildomar, on a Yamamoto jig.

LAKE JENNINGS--Trout fishing remains good. A three-pounder was caught by 11-year-old Kimberly Taylor, San Diego. Top bass was a 5-12 by Craig Adolph, El Cajon, on a plastic worm.

LAKE CUYAMACA--You might find snow on the ground here, and the frigid temperatures have slowed the trout bite. Limits usually require at least 1 1/2 hours for trollers and bait fishermen.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--10 anglers (1 boat): 4 calico bass, 2 sand bass, 2 lingcod, 10 red snapper, 15 rockfish.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--29 anglers (2 boats): 1 white seabass, 1 sculpin, 10 rockfish, 33 red snapper, 1 calico bass.

MARINA DEL REY--18 anglers (1 boat): 35 sand bass.

REDONDO BEACH--20 anglers (2 boats): 50 sand bass, 1 calico bass, 26 sculpin, 4 whitefish, 34 rockfish.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--21 anglers (2 boats): 80 sand bass, 2 sculpin, 1 halibut, 1 calico bass.

LONG BEACH (Marina Sportfishing)--9 anglers (1 boat): 2 calico bass, 3 sand bass, 13 whitefish, 3 sheephead, 4 sculpin, 34 rockfish, 1 cabezon. (Belmont Pier)--22 anglers (1 boat): 1 cowcod, 30 rockcod, 60 red snapper, 40 salmon grouper. (Pierpoint Landing)--53 anglers (3 boats): 20 yellowtail, 137 sand bass, 2 calico bass, 11 whitefish, 12 sheephead, 12 sculpin, 31 rockfish, 2 perch, 1 cabezon.

SEAL BEACH (Big Fish)--21 anglers (1 boat): 56 sand bass, 6 sculpin, 40 tomcod.

NEWPORT BEACH (Davey’s Locker)--82 anglers (4 boats): 2 white seabass, 9 calico bass, 88 sand bass, 17 sculpin, 10 sheephead, 1 halibut, 1 rockfish, 6 mackerel, 2 yellowfin croaker, 2 China croaker.

DANA WHARF--23 anglers (2 boats): 16 calico bass, 18 sand bass, 21 mackerel.

OCEANSIDE (Halgren’s)--57 anglers (2 boats): 19 sculpin, 1 whitefish, 67 rockfish, 6 red snapper.
