Public Lands

Re “Feds Must Oversee Federal Lands,” Commentary, April 11: The headline says it; but I would add that in the 1980s participants in the Sagebrush Rebellion, whom Tom Turner introduces in their latest disguise as “Enlibrans,” greatly reduced federal spending for protection and restoration of public lands.

In my view, it’s time to change course. Federal lands should no longer be revenue producers. Federal lands should be managed for the benefit of the plants and animals whose home they are, for all who are affected by destruction of watersheds and for the growing number of citizens who find respite from urban tensions in our shrinking wilderness.

This reincarnation of the Sagebrush Rebellion should strap on backpacks, lace up hiking boots and get to know that which they so cavalierly exploit.
