Permit Decision Delayed for Elysium Resort

The decision to extend the life of a clothing-optional resort has been postponed until May 19 while the group devises a plan to meet a series of conditions.

The Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission ordered Elysium Institute Inc. to submit a plan for an exit strategy for the facility in the event of fire.

Also, an emergency fire evacuation plan must be posted on the site and given to all members. The plans must be approved by the county Fire Department.

In addition, Elysium was asked to improve Robinson Road, the narrow road on which it sits, including fixing potholes, and to improve directional signs inside and outside the facility.

Neighbors at a public hearing last month complained of traffic and fire hazards presented by the retreat, which is in the hills next to Topanga State Park.

Commission Chairwoman Esther Feldman, whose district includes the retreat, asked for the delay.

Elysium received a five-year conditional use permit in 1993, after a court battle that reached appeals courts. The permit expired last year.

The membership count is currently near 500, about half what it was in its heyday.
