The Anaheim City School District recently applied for three federal grants, totaling $3.5 million, from the Schools and Libraries Universal Service Program to bring elementary classrooms into the 21st century. Earlier this month, district officials approved the application to fund creation of a districtwide telephone system to connect schools to the Internet.

Jill Henricks, director of technology and information systems, said the district searches for funds to bring information tools to students. “We only have three phone lines in every school,” she said. “We’re really in need of upgrading our services.”

More than 32,000 schools nationwide have applied for funds from the Schools and Libraries Universal Service Program. Successful grant applicants will be announced in July. Program information: (888) 203-8100.
