ORANGE COUNTY EARNINGS

Day Runner Inc.: The Irvine manufacturer of organizers and planners reported a third-quarter net loss of $4.6 million, or 37 cents a share, contrasted with net income of $1.1 million, or 9 cents a share, for the same quarter of last year. Sales for the quarter ended March 31 advanced 23% to $36.2 million from $29.4 million.

The company attributed the sales gain to the acquisition of Filofax in late October. It said the loss was due primarily to Day Runner’s inability to absorb higher operating expenses as a result of lower-than-anticipated sales.
