Council members have unanimously approved plans to dedicate Cousteau Pit and the Juan Avila Adobe as historical monuments. A formal ceremony is scheduled for July 3. The council also approved developing a historical guide to the city highlighting the landmarks. Fossil remains from rabbits, sabre-tooth cats and other creatures were first discovered at Cousteau Pit in 1965. The Juan Avila Adobe, dating from the early 1800s, was the site of many political meetings concerning American versus Mexican rule in California. Information: (949) 707-2600.
