President Clinton has nominated Lt. Gen. James Jones to be commandant of the Marine Corps and Gen. Eric Shinseki to be chief of staff of the Army, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

If confirmed by Congress, Jones would be promoted to four-star rank and replace retiring Gen. Charles Krulak on June 30. Shinseki, already with four stars, would take over for Gen. Dennis Reimer on June 21. Krulak and Reimer will have completed their appointed four years as chiefs.

Jones, 55, is a decorated Vietnam veteran who has been the senior military assistant to Defense Secretary William S. Cohen since Cohen took office in early 1997.

Shinseki, 55, a decorated 33-year Army veteran, is vice chief of staff. He served 10 years in Europe, including a term as commanding general of U.S. Army-Europe in 1997-98 while also commanding the NATO-led Bosnia peacekeepers.
