School Plans Benefit Fashion Show

* “Spring Into the New Millennium” is the theme for a fashion show at 11 a.m. today at St. Aquinas Hall, 155 E. Janss Road, in Thousand Oaks. Men’s, women’s and children’s fashions provided by Robinsons/May will be modeled by parish volunteers. St. Paschal Baylon School is mounting the show as its annual fund-raiser.

A silent auction will begin the day, followed by lunch at 12:30 p.m.

Runway activities get underway at 1:30 p.m.

The event is open to the public, and tickets are $30. Funds will benefit the St. Paschal Baylon School Endowment Fund. Call 579-6170 for more information.

Day of Enrichment for Disabled

* Handicapables will offer a day of spiritual and social enrichment for all physically disabled people today at Mary Star of the Sea Parish Hall in Oxnard.

The parish hall is at 463 W. Pleasant Valley Road. Registration is at 11 a.m., and Mass is at 11:30. A luncheon with entertainment follows.

There is no charge, and all faiths are welcome.

Talk on ‘Jews in Hollywood’

* Ivor and Sally Davis, whose syndicated columns and articles have appeared in the New York Times and Cosmopolitan, will discuss “Jews in Hollywood During the Nineties” during brunch at Ventura’s Temple Beth Torah at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

A discussion will follow. The cost is $10 at the door.

Cal Lutheran Sunday Celebration

* Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks will celebrate Cal Lutheran Sunday this year on Sunday. The 775 churches that make up the congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the churches that form CLU’s constituency in the Southwest and Hawaii will recognize their alliance.

Events at Our Saviours Church

* The Rev. Mary Ann Feine of Our Saviours Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oxnard invites the community to its Sunday 9:15 a.m. service. Fellowship immediately follows, and Sunday school for all ages begins at 10:45 a.m.

The Wednesday Bible study group meets at 7:15 p.m. The youth group’s meeting starts at 7 p.m. A 12-step recovery group meets every Monday evening at 7:30.

Service for Holocaust Victims

* La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks, a girls’ Catholic junior and senior high school, will conduct an interreligious service of commemoration for the victims of the Holocaust at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the school at 106 W. Janss Road.

The service, titled “From Desolation to Hope,” will include Hebrew songs, Catholic prayers and personal testimonies.

Joe Kleinhandler, who was a Jewish boy in northern France during World War II, will tell of being hidden from the Nazis by local nuns and priests.

Christopher Hutter, who was a Catholic boy in Poland during the war, will tell of being placed in a German youth camp.

Rabbi Ron Herstik will conduct prayers for the service. The public is invited.

B’Nai Emet Hosts Adult Class

* Congregation B’Nai Emet in Simi Valley will host a five-week adult education class on “Jewish Literacy/Introduction to Judaism” starting Tuesday. The class will discuss issues such as Jewish history, theology, holidays and rituals.

Rabbi Michele Paskow will teach the class, which costs $18 for temple members and $25 for nonmembers.

5-Week Hebrew Class to Begin

* A five-week class in beginning Hebrew will start at 8 p.m. Tuesday in a Congregation Am HaYam member’s home. The only charge is for the textbook.

In addition, Lillian Rosenbloom will speak on “Waters of Eden” on May 23. Rosenbloom is administrator of the mikvah at the University of Judaism. The mikvah is the ritual Jewish bath, symbolizing rebirth and renewal.

The free lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at the Oxnard Monday Club. Seating is limited, and attendance is by reservation only.

Remembering Victims of Violence

* The Faith Connection of Ventura County, an interfaith organization concerned with those who have been affected by violence or abuse, will sponsor an “Evening of Honor and Respect” for families and friends of young people who have lost their lives violently in Ventura County.

The potluck dinner is set for 6 p.m. May 1 in the Santa Clara School auditorium in Oxnard.

Several music groups will perform, and guests will share their experiences. Representatives from various county congregations and agencies will be present.

Congregation to Honor Mothers

* A Mother’s Day brunch will be held at 9:30 a.m. May 9 by Simi Valley’s Congregation B’Nai Emet. The men’s club will sponsor the event at the Simi Valley Senior Citizen Center.

Krishnamurti Gathering in Ojai

* The annual Gathering of the Krishnamurti Foundation of America is scheduled May 1 and 2 at Oak Grove School in Ojai.

Raymond Martin, Mary Cadogan and audio- and videotapes of Krishnamurti will be featured, along with dialogue sessions both afternoons, a book sale and an information tent.

The event is free, with a charge for a picnic lunch. The May 1 session will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Events May 2 are set for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New Hispanic Ministry in Simi

* The community is invited to celebrate a new Hispanic ministry at the Simi Valley United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. May 2. A Mexican lunch will follow the worship celebration.

Since January, more than 60 Spanish-speaking adults and children have met for worship, fellowship and study at the church. Thus, the decision was made to bless a new ministry “in order to reach out to almost 19% of our city’s population,” said Brandon Cho, senior pastor at the church.

Cho and David Richardson, the area’s district superintendent, will speak. Their remarks will be translated into Spanish.

Educator to Enter Priesthood

* The Rev. David E. Pressey, a longtime Ojai resident and ordained deacon in the Anglican faith, will be elevated to the priesthood on May 2 in Ventura.

In services conducted at 10:30 a.m. at St. George’s Anglican Church, the Most Rev. Robert Godfrey, presiding bishop of the nationwide Episcopal Orthodox Church, will act as ordaining bishop.

Pressey is a retired teacher and counselor with the Ventura Unified School District as well as a religious historian.

“The ordination ceremony is a particularly impressive rite, and Anglicans, Episcopalians and friends and acquaintances are welcome to attend the ordination of this well-known education and religious figure,” said William Henry of the church.

Jubilee Church Hosts Call to Prayer

School to Host Family Program

* Our Redeemer Nursery School and Kindergarten in Oxnard invites parents and children to a Celebration of Family on May 7.

Diana Eastin will present a program called “I Need Help--Where Do I Find It?”

Eastin, who teaches child and adolescent therapy at Cal Lutheran University, uses humor and her expertise as a marriage and family therapist in teaching family members to draw on their personal resources.

The program runs from 7 to 8:45 p.m. and the 60-member children’s choir from South Coast Fellowship will open the festivities. Children’s Pastor Pauline Rivera will lead children in skits, singing, role playing and fun. Child care for babies will be provided.

The nursery school is asking for donations of old shoes to send to those in need.

Academy Plans Talk by Scientist

* The Conejo Jewish Academy in Agoura Hills will host a lecture May 27 by author and scientist Gerald Schroeder on the topic “Evolution: The Religion of the Blind Watchmaker.”

Schroeder has also written a book, “Genesis and the Big Bang,” comparing the scientific event of billions of years ago to the first six days described in Genesis.
