Happy 100, Hemingway!

This year marks the centennial of writer Ernest Hemingway’s birth on July 21, 1899, and fans have plotted dozens of observances:

The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., will display “In His Time: A Portrait of Ernest Hemingway,” a collection of rare photographs, paintings and original manuscripts, June 18-Nov. 7; (202) 357-2700.

Hemingway nieces host the International Hemingway Festival on Sanibel Island, Fla., from June 18-20, with writing and art contests; (800) 916-9727.

Hemingway made Pamplona, Spain’s running of the bulls famous, and from July 1-31, the town will exhibit manuscripts, letters, photographs, posters and other items. Tourist Office of Spain, (888) 657-7246.

The Hemingway Birthday Extravaganza in Oak Park, Ill., from July 14-21 includes tours of his birthplace; (708) 848-2222. From Oak Park on July 22, for $75 round-trip, take a narrated re-creation of the Hemingway family’s first road trip to Walloon Lake near Petoskey, Mich., the setting for the Nick Adams stories.
