Chavez to Be Honored With Week of Events

Share

Ventura College will hold a week of music, theater and presentations to honor Cesar Chavez.

Tributes to Chavez, a onetime Oxnard resident, begin today and run through Friday.

Since Chavez’s death in 1993, Ventura College has set aside a day to honor the United Farm Workers co-founder, said history instructor Mayo de la Rocha. This year, event organizers decided to dedicate an entire week.

“Chavez told us that it was important to help the community and become part of a solution,” De la Rocha said. “He inspired a lot of us. We’re involved because of him.”

Signatures will also be gathered at the event to ask the postmaster general to create a stamp in honor of Chavez, De la Rocha said. Chavez lived in the La Colonia area of Oxnard for a short time as a child, and the home he shared with his family was dedicated last year.

There will be events every day, including a film Tuesday by Elias Serna of the UCLA film school and a presentation Wednesday by Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the farm workers union.

All events are sponsored by the student group MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan) and faculty at Ventura College.
