Some of the large construction projects that have frustrated drivers along Coast Highway for months are nearing completion. Primary among them is the expansion of the Arches Bridge. Work on the final two ramps is virtually complete. Both are scheduled to be reopened today, when, for the first time in nearly two years, the bridge will be completely open.
The bridge, which spans the interchange at Newport Boulevard and West Coast Highway, has been under construction since September 1997. It has the largest traffic burden of any interchange in the county, with 121,000 drivers passing through it each day, according to the Orange County Transportation Authority.
Also nearing completion is the expansion of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. The hospital is adding a services building that will house administrative support functions. A tree reforestation project in and around the Coast Highway area in Corona del Mar also is nearly finished.
