Two men wounded in a neighborhood gun battle stumbled onto the grounds of an elementary school Thursday, heightening parents’ fears about school security.

“One collapsed at the door, the other got inside the school. That’s what scared a lot of people,” said District of Columbia Emergency Management Director Sam Jordan.

The pair were among four men wounded in a gun battle about a block from J.O. Wilson Elementary School. “The shooting had nothing to do with the school,” said Police Cmdr. Kim Dine.

Denise Tann, a spokeswoman for the school district, said it should not have been possible for the wounded men to open the school door from the outside. “If the suspect got inside the building, then there should have been security on scene to hold them.”

School officials said three district schools received bomb threats Thursday. On Monday, all but one of the city’s 17 high schools were evacuated because of bomb threats.
