Hoover Gets One-Upped by Cervenka, 1-0

Meredith Cervenka led off the top of the seventh inning with a home run to give Crescenta Valley a 1-0 victory over Hoover in a Pacific League game Thursday at Hoover.

Cervenka (15-5) pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight and walking two, for Crescenta Valley (16-5, 6-0), ranked sixth in the region by the Times.

Justine Takizawa hit a one-out single in the sixth inning for Hoover (11-6, 3-3).

Melinda Moulden’s fourth-inning double was Crescenta Valley’s only other hit off Cori Herbert (11-6) of Hoover, who struck out three and walked none.

Hoover loaded the bases with two out in the sixth on Takizawa’s single and two walks, but Evelyn Crowder grounded out.

All three of the Tornadoes’ losses in league play have been by one run.

Newbury Park 2, Agoura 1--Katie Stokx tripled and scored the winning run on Amber Mastrioanni’s squeeze in the fourth inning of a Marmonte League game at Borchard Park in Newbury Park.

Agoura (6-10, 1-8) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on consecutive doubles by Veronica Rodarte and Kelly Havel.

Oli Keohohou tied the score in the third with a run-scoring triple for Newbury Park (16-4, 7-1), which moved into the league lead when Thousand Oaks beat Westlake.

Alyson Blum (6-1) pitched a four-hitter with four strikeouts for Newbury Park.

Moorpark 3, Simi Valley 1--Jennilee Martin hit a two-run double and a run-scoring single for the Musketeers (10-10, 2-7) in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park.

Freshman Tara Barker (6-4) came in to pitch with one out in the fourth inning and runners at first and third. She induced Melissa King of Simi Valley (11-7, 3-5) to hit into a double play.

Quartz Hill 8, Antelope Valley 0--Jodie Cox (19-1) pitched a two-hitter and had 12 strikeouts in six innings for the Rebels in a Golden League victory at Quartz Hill.

Kelly Cox hit one of four doubles for Quartz Hill (20-1, 6-0), ranked No. 1.

Saugus 3, Canyon 2--Elizabeth Harkins scored from second on an error in the eighth and the Centurions (11-6-1, 6-0) won a Foothill League game at Saugus.

Hart 18, Burbank 2--Lindsey Kontra hit a three-run home run and had five RBIs in a Foothill League game at Newhall Park.

Carly Caldaronello hit a two-run double for Hart (14-4-1, 5-1).

Reseda 7, Poly 0--Stephanie Yeatts pitched a four-hitter for the Regents with 10 strikeouts and one walk in a Mid-Valley League victory at Poly.

Osiris Lopez had four hits, including an RBI double, for Reseda (4-10, 3-6).

Sylmar 7, Monroe 2--Krystal Mejia hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for the Spartans (13-5, 8-1) in a Mid-Valley league game at Monroe.

North Hollywood 12, Grant 7--Christina Schaefer hit her second grand slam and third home run in three games and had two singles for the host Huskies in an East Valley League victory.

Angela Sanhueza had four hits and scored two runs for the Huskies (9-5, 7-1).

Village Christian 19, Pasadena Marshall 0--Freshman Shannon Stauffer pitched five perfect innings with eight strikeouts and had three hits for the Crusaders in an Alpha League game at Marshall.

Robin Pearce had three hits and five RBIs for Village Christian (11-7, 2-2).

Oak Park 4, St. Bonaventure 1--Cindy Verity and Brenda Pasqua each had two hits and the Eagles (14-3-1, 6-0) won a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.

La Reina 20, Fillmore 0--Kristen Ward drove in six runs with four hits and pitched a five-hitter in a Tri-Valley League game at La Reina that was called after five innings.

Ward hit a single and a grand slam to highlight a 10-run first inning for La Reina (14-6, 5-1).

In her fourth shutout, Ward (7-3) struck out three and walked none.
