Grant Overcomes Seven-Run Deficit

Felipe Tetelboin hit a three-run home run, Cole James had three hits and Grant High overcame a seven-run deficit to defeat Poly, 12-10, in an East Valley League game Thursday at Grant.

Grant (16-5, 10-2 in league play) moved to within one game of the first-place Parrots (18-6, 11-1) and ended Poly’s winning streak at 12 games.

Trailing 10-3, the Lancers scored four runs in the fifth with the help of an error and three hit batsmen, and they scored five runs in the sixth.

Poly hit three home runs, including grand slams by Juan Guerrero and Manny Flores. Juan Flores also homered.

Jon Spielvogel hit a two-out, two-run single to tie the score, 10-10, in the sixth. Spielvogel made it 11-10 when he scored from first base on consecutive throwing errors by Poly infielders.

Tetelboin hit his seventh home run of the season to help Grant pull to within 10-7 in the fifth. Tetelboin added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Sylmar 12, North Hollywood 0--Sophomore Greg Ramos threw a one-hitter for Sylmar (16-5, 10-2) in an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Sylmar’s Eddie Camacho had two hits and drove in four runs, and Larry Anguino and Sam Ponce each finished with three hits.

Chatsworth 10, Taft 1--Mike Kunes (7-1) retired every batter through four innings and finished with a one-hitter and seven strikeouts for Chatsworth (17-3, 10-1) in a West Valley League game at Taft.

Kunes allowed a fifth-inning infield single to David Aaronson and walked two, facing 24 batters.

Jason Spector had three hits, including a home run and a double, in his first game at Taft since transferring to Chatsworth.

El Camino Real 10, Birmingham 0--Ryan Gunches threw a five-hitter for host El Camino Real (16-4, 9-3) in a West Valley League called after six innings because of the 10-run rule. It was the first time Birmingham (12-12, 3-9) has been shut out this season.

Kennedy 7, Cleveland 1--Freshman Adam Geery threw a three-hitter and the Golden Cougars (13-12, 7-5) won a North Valley League game at Cleveland (9-12, 5-7).

Granada Hills 11, San Fernando 0--Peter Tuber threw a two-hitter and Jon Bringuier hit a three-run home run for the Highlanders (16-4, 9-2) in a North Valley League game at Granada Hills called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Van Nuys 5, Monroe 4--Kay Nava drove in two runs with a two-out double in the seventh for host Van Nuys (6-12, 3-8) in a Mid-Valley League game.
