The city’s public library will become the fifth library in the country to operate as a United States Passport Acceptance Agency, pending final approval from the City Council.
If the program is approved, the library will function as an alternative to the U.S. Post Office for people applying for new passports.
The library plans to open the agency on Wednesday evenings, Friday mornings and Saturdays to make the application process more convenient for people unable to make it to the post office during its regular hours.
The library already has received approval from the U.S. State Department. City Librarian Valerie Meyer said the library hopes to train its staff and begin operating as an acceptance agency by the end of September.
