Foundation Announces Service Award Nominees

The 1999 Fernando Award nominees were announced Monday by the Fernando Award Foundation, a nonprofit organization that honors people for community service to the San Fernando Valley.

The foundation has recognized outstanding volunteers since 1958 with an Oscar-like statuette of a young Native American man.

Fernando nominee--The name of one of the nominees for the 1999 Fernando Award was misspelled in a story Tuesday. The nominee is Laurence Goldman of West Hills.

This year’s nominees are: Ruth Richter, Winnetka; Albert Timins, Tujunga; Lawrence Goodman, West Hills; Dennis Poncher and Ronald Ben Clary, Canoga Park; Robert Voit, Bob Scott, Rose Goldwater and David Auger, Woodland Hills; Irwin Silon, Arleta; Erica De Smith, Northridge; Lee Kanon Alpert, Encino; Alice Medellin, Granada Hills; and Farideh Kioumehr, Sherman Oaks.

“Every one of them are extraordinary individuals who have given of themselves selflessly, providing countless hours and years of service to make the San Fernando Valley a better place to live and work,” said Irwin Rosenberg, president of the Fernando Award Foundation.

The field will be narrowed to five finalists Aug. 26, and the winner will be announced at a black-tie banquet Nov. 5 at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills.
