Irvine Unified School District trustees will debate cutting back on the number of health clerks serving their schools tonight.
Nine of the employees already abandoned their positions last spring when they first heard of the pending budget cuts.
An original plan had called for the complete elimination of all 28 health clerk positions in the district. Administrators grappling with a $4-million budget deficit that threatens arts, music and science programs saw the cut as a way to save money.
But some Board of Education members have asked to preserve at least some of the clerks, who supervise medication for students, fill out reports and take sick children to a nurse, among other things.
The board meets at 7:30 tonight, 5050 Barranca Parkway.
