U.S. Gives $12 Million for Refinery Cleanup
Nearly $12 million in federal funds has been awarded to Santa Fe Springs in an effort to assist in the cleanup and redevelopment of the city’s former oil refinery and tank farm property.
The award will help to create about 680 jobs and stimulate millions of dollars in investments into the economy, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo said this week.
The city will receive a $1.75-million Brownfields Economic Development Initiative grant and $10 million in loan guarantees to develop a new industrial and commercial business park, to be named Golden Springs Business Center. It is to include more than 5 million square feet of building space. Rep. Grace F. Napolitano (D-Norwalk), who represents the area, said she hopes the grant will help transform the site into a place of business that will bring more jobs into the community.
The funds will also be used for environmental treatment. The total cost of the project is estimated to exceed $160 million.
