Normally, I would not respond to a review of a performance by my JazzAntiqua Dance & Music Ensemble (“Companies Kick In for a Tribute to Duke Ellington,” by Lewis Segal, Aug. 9). The enthusiastic response of our audience and the opportunities we are offered following performances are always review enough. However, when JazzAntiqua’s professionalism, production and administrative abilities are unjustly called into question, I am propelled to respond.

Segal states, “The very late start and the inaccurate program data suggested a dependence on last-minute decisions.” The late program start was the decision of the Ford Theatre house manager, and rightly so, because the event was completely sold out, and it takes time for 1,241 people to navigate Hollywood Bowl traffic, the Ford’s on- and off-site parking situation, the shuttle service and the box office.

The inaccurate program data consisted of an amazing three changes. It’s jazz. We go with the flow and improvise where need be, adjusting to unexpected developments and unforeseen circumstances as they occur. The changes in no way marred or disrupted the flow of the program.
