Attorney Sentenced for Attacking Son

A man who attacked his son with a golf club when the boy tried to stop him from buying alcohol pleaded no contest Friday to charges of assault with a deadly weapon and child endangering, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney said.

Kenneth Bruce Alexander, 48, was sentenced in Van Nuys Municipal Court to one year in jail plus four years’ probation, during which he will have to attend parenting class and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, according to city attorney spokesman Mike Qualls.

Alexander was arrested July 11 after police received a 911 call from his 17-year-old son.

The teenager told officers that his father had been drinking and that he had taken his father’s wallet to prevent him from buying more alcohol, Qualls said.

Alexander became enraged and attacked his son with the golf club.

“The boy said his father tried to hit him with chopping motions,” Qualls said. “But he dodged and ducked, and the blows didn’t land.”

The father then left the apartment. Police found him walking down a nearby street with the golf club in one hand and a bottle of beer in the other, Qualls said.

Alexander, an attorney, was on probation at the time of his arrest, stemming from a 1998 hit-and-run conviction.
