Allied Warplanes Targeted by Missiles

Iraqi gunners stepped up resistance to Western air patrols, firing surface-to-air missiles at warplanes monitoring a “no-fly” zone over northern Iraq, a U.S. Air Force officer said in Turkey, where the planes are based. It appeared to be the first use of such missiles since December, when Iraq started challenging U.S. and British planes patrolling the no-fly zones in the north and south. Iraq said Western planes attacked northern sites before antiaircraft defenses and missile units forced them to leave. A U.S. F-16 jet responded by firing a high-speed anti-radiation missile.
