Last season, Kenny Irwin was the best young driver on the NASCAR circuit. Now, he doesn’t even have a ride for next week.

The 1998 Winston Cup Rookie of the Year winner will part ways with owner Robert Yates, whom Irwin has been driving the No. 28 car for, after today’s Frontier at the Glen.

Yates had hoped Irwin would give him a strong car to team with the No. 88 of series points leader Dale Jarrett.

Instead, Irwin, who began the year with a third-place finish in the Daytona 500, has only two top 10 finishes and is 20th in the point race.

After becoming the only driver in NASCAR’s modern era (since 1972) to start on the front row and finish in the top 10 in his first race in September 1997, Irwin had four top 10 finishes in his rookie season.
