Warren Beatty

Re “Put ‘Bulworth’ in the White House?” Commentary, Aug. 10:

I agree with Arianna Huffington in a way. It would be interesting to see Warren Beatty running for something--Congress, the Senate, even perhaps the presidency.

But I question her motives. If Beatty ran, wouldn’t he siphon off votes from Al Gore and Bill Bradley, thus splintering the Democrats and giving George W. Bush a better chance?

* Huffington’s column is a much-needed wake-up call to the political leadership of America, both Democratic and Republican. American working people are so disenfranchised, so blatantly ignored by the Beltway politicians, that a political earthquake is not far away.

Downsizing and right-sizing, layoffs as thanks for record profits, the disappearance of family-supporting jobs, the embrace of NAFTA and GATT, all these are brewing a foul political mood among the working majority. The next economic downturn is likely to bring that mood to the boiling point. Huffington’s suggestion that we tap Beatty to bring the Bulworth role public is no joke. It beats the possibility of a new president who used to wrestle in a purple feather boa.
