A $750,000-a-year elementary music program will begin this fall, teacher Michael Short announced at last week’s Orange Unified School District meeting. After going more than 10 years without music education, the district’s 16,000 elementary school students will receive lessons in music appreciation, vocals and instruments.

The district has hired 14 music teachers who will teach biweekly in kindergarten through third grades and weekly in fourth- through sixth-grade classrooms. Sixth-graders will be the only ones to receive instrument instruction, but it is the district’s plan to extend instruction to fourth- and fifth-graders in three years. Information: (714) 997-6057.
