The owner of an apartment building that was ordered torn down by the City Council because of substandard living conditions said he does not want to demolish the buildings. The landlord, Mangal Verma, said he is repairing broken windows and rotting walls in the three-unit building, which were in June declared a public nuisance by the City Council.

“I have been going and fixing things,” Verma said. “I don’t know why the city is so angry at me. I expect the city to have some sense and some honor.”

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to tear down the apartments, which for at least 12 years have been the source of complaints from neighbors.
