Pharoah Sanders Quartet (Catalina Bar & Grill, 1640 N. Cahuenga Blvd., [323] 466-2210). Formerly the most fiery of the young saxophonists of the 1960s, Sanders has matured into a mellow John Coltrane-inspired interpreter of ballads and standards. 8:30 p.m. Also Wednesday-Sunday.

Los Angeles Philharmonic (Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N. Highland Ave., [323] 850-2000). Enlisting the collaboration of piano soloist Alexander Toradze, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, dramaturge Peter Sellars, plus the electronic additions of a light show and a video, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen has reinvented components of the program, which returns him to the Hollywood Bowl: Stravinsky’s “The King of the Stars,” Scriabin’s “Prometheus, Poem of Fire,” Ligeti’s “Clocks and Clouds” and “Deserts” by Edgard Varese. 8:30 p.m.

Doug Budin and Randall Rapstine take 20 quirky characters on an offbeat journey through life, from an 8-year-old minimalist playwright to a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon.
