Driver Testing Bill

* Opposition by AARP, which charges age discrimination, has resulted in the emasculation of state Sen. Tom Hayden’s bill that would have required road tests of drivers over the age of 75 (Aug. 18). The issue is not age discrimination, however, but rather the public welfare.
The infirmities of old age eventually catch up with all of us. The understandable reluctance of most older people to relinquish their driving licenses makes it essential that the state determine when their continued driving represents an unacceptable hazard, both to themselves and to others. AARP does its members no favor by its unthinking reaction to the Hayden bill.
